PRESIDENT'S REPORT:                                           May 2008

It seems like only yesterday when I attended my first transportation dinner, and that was back in 1968. Little did I realize then that I would have the honour of serving as your President some 40 years later.

Much has changed in the last 40 years in all modes of transport, with container ships replacing much of the cargo previously shipped on breakbulk ships, aircraft dedicated to cargo only, specialized trucks and intermodal units moving via rail.

We have also seen changes in the type of cargo as Canada moved into more manufacturing, including high-tech products, and thus reducing their dependency on bulk cargoes.

Regretfully, with the introduction of computers, we have all witnessed a reduction in the number of staff required and have also seen a number of corporations including shipping companies close their offices in many cities as they move to large east coast locations as well as off-shore bases.

When one looks at our objectives, which were written some 50 years ago, they are as meaningful today as when they were written.

To foster and promote shipper and carrier co-operation in transportation.

To promote sociability and friendship among its members.

To effect sound transportation policies through the study and discussion of all questions relating to all phases of transportation.

To inspire those in traffic work to the importance and dignity of their profession.

I look forward to my term in office as your representative; strengthening the club with your help by increasing the membership and representing the members, with the Directors support, in all transportation matters.

Yours truly,

Craig McKay
